How do you pronounce Cotoe?

In Japanese it is ko-to-eh, like co in coil, to in toy and e in pen. Some English speakers pronounce it ko-toe, like co in color and toa in toast.

What should I do first?

We are recommending the following steps to fresh users

1. Peruse the site home
   • Subscribe to the popular pages digest feed if you feel like it
2. Sign up
3. Install the Cotoe Toolbar
   • You can use the Bookmarklet if you don't use any of the supported web browsers
4. Try out the tools to make your first highlight
5. Follow someone interesting
6. Chuckle to yourself over your Dashboard

What's the difference between social bookmarking services?

The differentiating features are the following:

• You can save not only the URL of a webpage, but also mark and highlight some parts of its text
• You can overlay what others have highlighted on that webpage (You can find out if anyone has read that page already)
• Cotoe generates page digests automatically for you

What is "Follow" and how do I use it?

To follow means you subscribe to someone's highlights. You can see them in your %s. If you find a friend or someone with an interesting view point, just go ahead and try following them.

Can I highlight images and videos?

Not yet but we will add it in future updates.

Can I import and/or export to synchronize with my local data and/or other services?

Net yet right now, but we are planning on it.

How do I post?

In order to post to Cotoe, you need to use the Cotoe Toolbar or the bookmarklet. The bookmarklet only has limited functionality and is for those who don't use any of the browsers supported by the toolbar. If you use one of the supported browsers, we recommend you to Install the Cotoe Toolbar. If not, please use the Bookmarklet.

How do I use the Toolbar?

I don't see any digest although the page has many highlights

There are several reasons for this and the issue is under investigation. We would appreciate it if you sent us your Feedback when you encounter this problem.

The situation is that there is no page digest although highlights have been submitted. This happens when Cotoe runs into certain problems between submission of highlights and digest generation:

1. Retrieve the whole webpage from which the highlights have been submitted
2. Analyze the page structure and map the highlights

The most typical reasons for failure when generating digests are:

1. Could not retrieve the webpage
   • authorization was required
   • cotoe.net could not reach the server where the page is located
2. Could not analyze the page structure or could not map highlights
   • HTML source of the webpage was not valid and the client web browser was interpreting the quirks by moving things around.
     (One of the common mistakes is to place p, div or ul elements inside a p element)
   • Modification to the page structure by JavaScript and other means affected the mapping of highlights
   • The page content depended on the viewer's environment such as language settings, IP address and browser type.

Of course there is possible bugs and quirks on Cotoe's side, but the prime source of the problem seems to be reason #2. Please acknowledge that to fix these cases, we have no way but to ask the site owners to fix their content.

No parts are highlighted using the Cotoe Toolbar although the page has many

• It is most likely the same reason page digest generation sometimes fails.
• If the HTML source of a page is partially invalid, it may result in the page being only partially highlighted.

Why not support browsers other than Firefox?

Because we have limited resources. orz
But of course supporting other browsers like Safari and IE is our top priority. Please look forward to our future releases.

Is my personal browsing history going to be used in any ways?

Please rest assured that none of your personally identifiable information is stored on our server.

Mobile mode?

Not yet but it should be added in future updates.

Can I have multiple accounts in Cotoe?

It is not permitted for a single person to register multiple accounts.

Do you ever flag or delete my account, posts and browsing history?

Not under normal circumstances. However, in case of excessive posts to manipulate ranks and such usages considered spams, appropriate actions will be executed.
