Cotoe Toolbar How-to Video

Get familiar with the new buttons

After you install the Cotoe Toolbar, "Tools" menu of the browser should have a new item named "Cotoe".
The toolbar itself is located just above the status bar.
Place your mouse cursor over each menu items and toolbar buttons to see the tooltip provided.

You can show/hide the toolbar from "View" > "Cotoe Toolbar" menu item.

Check the page stats

Let's see what this toolbar can do. Press the Cotoe-san button, the second one from the left, to activate auto retrieving of page stats.
The grayed-out text that read "- Users / - Highlights" should now display the number of highlights and users who have saved the current page to Cotoe.
Visit some webpages like here or here to see how the number changes.

These numbers show:

  • How many parts have been highlighted in this page
  • How many users have highlighted this page

which indicates the popularity of the page you're looking at.
These numbers get updated in real time as you browse through the web.

If you find a page with more than one users, pressing the "Go!" button will take you to the URL details page at cotoe.net.
There you can see all of the highlights made by other people.

Highlight view the key points of a webpage

If there is more than one highlights, you can view the highlighted parts layered on top of the page.
Press the "Show highlights" button to enter the view mode.
The screen will dim out while each highlights get illuminated, spotlighting the most marked parts in effect.
(It may take a while to fetch all information.)

Background of highlights are colored in shades of orange, with the more overlapping portion getting the darker shade. To exit view mode, either press the same button again or click somewhere on the page.

One caveat to note: If the page you are viewing is not valid HTML, Cotoe may not be able to correctly match the highlight's exact location.
Reporting to the site author may fix such issues.

Mark and save highlights of webpages

Now lets try marking and saving.
Find a page you'd like to mark and save highlights and press the highlighter button in the Cotoe Toolbar.

Now you are in Highlight Mode. Try and see how each paragraphs get highlighted as you move around the mouse cursor.
You can see the Toolbar gets expanded with new elements: number of current highlights, and a save button.

Click on any paragraph to add it to your highlights. Highlights are marked with green "Clip!" balloons.
The Highlights count indicator in the Toolbar should turn to 1.

You can also click and drag for finer control over the highlight range.
Try marking more parts of the page.

Save multiple highlights at a time

When you are done with the page, click on the Save button.
You will see an alert message saying "Saved successfully".

Also, you can save a page without marking any highlights, just like a normal online bookmarking service.
Your highlights are kept in your Dashboard.
To cancel Highlight Mode, click on the highlighter button again.

Note: you need to be logged in to the Cotoe website in order to save your highlights. If you see an error message "You are not logged in", login to the Cotoe website and try again.

Troubleshooting

When posting, Cotoe Toolbar needs the cookie information stored in your Firefox by Cotoe website. There should be no problem with Firefox's default cookie settings, as long as you are logged in to the Cotoe website.
However, if you get an error saying "You are not logged in" even if you are, try either of the cookie settings described below.

Accept cookies from any sites

Open Firefox preferences » Privacy tab » under Cookies...

  • Check "Accept cookies from sites" option
  • Check "Accept third-party cookies" option

Add cotoe.net to allowed sites

Open Firefox preferences » Privacy tab » under Cookies...

  • Click "Exceptions..." button and open the Cookies Exceptions window, enter cotoe.net and click "Allow" button.
